Somatic Touch Therapy is our signature therapeutic model for addressing stress, chronic pain, & trauma. Somatic Experiencing®, a body-based naturalistic approach to healing trauma developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, and Five Element Acupuncture Theory, a Chinese medicine approach based upon the Five Elements and their health correspondences to the body, form the very foundation for this unique approach.
Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) is based on the notion that trauma is not held in the event itself, but rather can become held in the nervous system. The SE™ model allows clients to build resiliency and complete the fight, flight, or freeze response that is often thwarted in early developmental trauma. Because Five Element Theory addresses not only internal organ meridian balances and imbalances in the body but also addresses the emotional and physiological "body armor" that is connected to traumatic experiences held in the cellular tissues, we utilize it along with SE™ to form and modulate a safe container for processing and healing trauma in a gradual, "titrated", way that is welcomed by the body.
Somatic Touch is a deeply collaborative approach that may incorporate Somatic Experiencing®, Five Element Theory, Jin Shin Do® Acupressure, dialogue, imagery, sensation, movement, energy balancing, and integrative massage therapies. This type of bodywork is non-traditional, gentle, fluid and non-invasive and is often done fully clothed in comfortable clothing on a massage table. For many, this can be a wonderful complement to other holistic modalities and psychotherapy, and for others, it can be a wonderful introduction to (re-)connecting with your body through safe and therapeutic touch work that is both nurturing and deeply transformative on emotional, physiological, and developmental levels.
